I built a website, but it does not show up when I search. Why?
In most cases the site has not dropped in the rankings; it simply has not been indexed yet. For a new domain, it is normal for search engines to take several weeks to discover and trust the site. Check first whether you are indexed, then check your blocking settings.
First, check whether you are indexed
Type site:yourdomain.com into the search box. If there are no results at all, it is an indexing problem, not a ranking problem. The two need completely different fixes.
If results appear but you do not show up only for the search terms you want, that is when it is a ranking problem.
Cause 1: a new domain needs time
This is the most common case, and it actually means nothing is wrong. Search engines do not trust a new site immediately. It takes from a few days to several weeks, and this period cannot be skipped with money or settings.
What you can do is bring discovery forward. Registering the site in Search Console and webmaster tools and submitting a sitemap makes crawlers find it sooner.
If a page is only in the sitemap and gets no links from other pages, discovery is even slower. A link from a page that is already indexed is a stronger signal than the sitemap. Our dental website guide (in Korean) is a page connected that way.
Cause 2: search engines are blocked
This is when a block set during development is still in place after launch. On WordPress, check the setting "Discourage search engines from indexing this site"; otherwise check robots.txt and the robots meta tag on your pages.
One thing to watch out for: if you view the source while logged in, it may differ from what real crawlers receive. Checking in a private window is more accurate.
Cause 3: there is nothing worth indexing
This is when there are few pages, most of them are images, or the content was copied as-is from other sites. From the search engine's point of view there is no reason to put it in the list.
In particular, content that only links out to external sites does not become an indexing asset for your site. You need writing that exists only on your site, even if it is short.
Cause 4: the brand name overlaps a common word
If your business name overlaps a common word, you get pushed down even in brand searches. In that case, check whether you show up first for "area name + business name" rather than the business name alone.
Frequently asked questions
Does submitting a sitemap get me indexed right away?
No. A sitemap is just a list telling search engines "these pages exist"; it does not promise indexing. It is more accurate to see it as a way to bring discovery forward.
Do I need to register separately with Naver and Google?
Yes. Naver Search Advisor and Google Search Console are separate services, and you have to verify site ownership in each one.
